The 55th edition of the Juno Awards is set to happen in Hamilton on Sunday, March 29. To mark the occasion, the CBC Music Top 20 has compiled a list of the most unforgettable moments in Juno Awards history, following extensive discussions with CBC Music staff.

In 2014, Tegan and Sara made history by becoming the first identical twins to clinch Juno Awards, triumphing in key categories like single (“Closer”), pop album (“Heartthrob”), and group of the year.

At the 1982 Juno Awards, Rough Trade defied organizers’ wishes by performing their chart-topping hit “High School Confidential.” Lead singer Carole Pope went further by executing a move during the performance that had been intended to be censored, sparking controversy and inspiring a young singer named k.d. lang.

In 2011, despite hosting the Junos, Drake faced disappointment as he was nominated for six awards but did not secure any wins, unlike Nelly Furtado in 2007, who swept all five categories she was nominated in.

Toronto rapper k-os caused a stir in 2007 by denouncing the Junos as “propaganda” during a live TV outburst in Saskatoon, smashing his guitar in a dramatic display following his performance of “Sunday Morning.”

These are just a few of the iconic moments that have shaped the Juno Awards over the years, with each installment adding to the rich tapestry of Canadian music history.
