The University of Saskatchewan Huskies narrowly defeated the Regina Rams 25-24 in a thrilling Hardy Cup showdown on Saturday, reclaiming the Canada West football championship and seeking revenge for their 19-14 loss last year.
This 88th Hardy Cup marked a historic occasion as the second all-Saskatchewan championship matchup in over two decades and the first consecutive provincial final between the same teams. The Regina Rams had secured their first all-Saskatchewan Hardy Cup victory in more than 20 years in the previous season.
In an incredible turn of events, the Huskies, trailing 24-9 in the fourth quarter, orchestrated a remarkable comeback, scoring 16 unanswered points to clinch the championship. Kicker Lucas Scott became the hero of the game with a game-winning field goal, sealing the victory for the Huskies.
Ryker Frank, a veteran running back, attributed the team’s resilience to their ability to execute under pressure. Coach Scott Flory commended the team’s focus and determination in the final moments despite facing challenges and turnovers.
With this win, the Huskies are one step closer to the Vanier Cup, set to be held in Regina later this month, marking only the third time the game will take place in Western Canada. Their next challenge is the Mitchell Bowl against Queen’s University in Saskatchewan next week.
Frank emphasized the team’s hard work and dedication as essential elements in preparing for crucial matches like the upcoming Mitchell Bowl. The Huskies, who had previously clinched the Hardy Cup in 2021 and 2022 but fell short in the Vanier Cup both years, entered the postseason with an impressive 7-1 regular-season record, securing the top spot in the Canada West conference.
On the other hand, the Rams earned their spot in the final by triumphing over the Manitoba Bisons in a thrilling 32-29 double-overtime semi-final clash. The Mitchell Bowl is scheduled for November 15 at 2:15 p.m. CST.
