Vancouver Rise FC landed at Vancouver International Airport on Sunday afternoon amidst cheers and chants from their supporters, who eagerly awaited the champions of the inaugural Northern Super League (NSL) title.

Just a day before, the team had staged a remarkable comeback against top-seeded AFC Toronto in the league’s first championship final. The game was marked by lightning delays, significant momentum shifts, and high drama on the field.

Fans of all ages gathered at the airport, waving scarves and signs as the players made their way through the arrivals area. Erika Wootten, a dedicated supporter who had followed the team throughout the season, expressed her excitement at finally meeting the players in person.

Wootten is a member of the Crow Collective, a passionate fan group for Vancouver Rise inspired by the nightly crow migration over Burnaby, B.C., including Swangard Stadium, the team’s home field.

The season had its share of nail-biting moments, especially during the final match. Despite finishing third in the regular season, Vancouver Rise were considered underdogs against a high-scoring Toronto squad. However, they displayed resilience and determination, coming from behind to secure a memorable victory.

Head coach Anja Heiner-Møller praised the fans for their unwavering support, noting that they had shown their commitment by purchasing tickets for the finals even before the team had qualified.

The team’s ability to remain composed in challenging situations has been a defining characteristic throughout the season, with numerous comebacks and thrilling victories. Forward Mariah Lee expressed her disbelief at waking up as a champion and emphasized the significance of the win for women’s sports in Canada.

The championship victory not only boosts Vancouver’s sporting profile but also signals progress for women’s sports in the country. Lee highlighted the exceptional talent in the league and emphasized the importance of continuing to elevate women’s sports on a global scale.

The federal government announced a commitment of up to $5.45 million to support the NSL and promote the growth of women’s professional soccer in Canada, underscoring the significance of the league’s success.
