Andy Campbell’s 1985 Toyota Tercel appears unassuming at first glance, with its vintage appeal reminiscent of a bygone era. However, a closer inspection reveals its extraordinary nature. Despite its flawless performance and near-pristine condition, the Tercel’s odometer falls short in capturing its full journey. Displaying 253,070 kilometers, the odometer lacks a digit, failing to account for the vehicle’s actual mileage of 1,253,070 kilometers.
This remarkable distance equates to over three times the span to the moon or enough to circumnavigate the Earth 31 times. Campbell commemorated the milestone when the odometer rolled over from 999,999 kilometers to 000,000 kilometers in September 2017. He captured the moment with photos, now stashed in his glove compartment as tangible evidence of his Tercel’s remarkable feat.
Acquired in 1990 for $2,500 with 125,000 kilometers on the clock, Campbell’s daily commute from Wyses Corner, N.S., to Halifax and back has contributed significantly to the Tercel’s mileage. Even in retirement, the car remains his go-to for daily tasks and ventures throughout the Maritimes, with occasional trips to Newfoundland.
While eligible for antique plates, Campbell opts against them to maintain the Tercel’s functionality for everyday use. He values its practicality, reliability in winter conditions, ease of maintenance, and cost-effectiveness. Campbell’s dedication to upkeep includes regular maintenance, undercoating, and meticulous greasing to combat rust, a common issue with Tercels.
Serving as his own mechanic, Campbell has diligently replaced and repaired components over the years, utilizing a stockpile of parts, many of which are now obsolete. With three additional Tercels on standby for spare parts, Campbell ensures his beloved vehicle remains roadworthy.
In the event of maintenance, Campbell unveils his backup Tercel, an ’86 model, showcasing his commitment to the brand. Despite not identifying as a car enthusiast, Campbell’s attachment to his Tercel stems from its practicality, performance in adverse conditions, and economic value. His dedication to the vehicle’s longevity is evident in his reluctance to part with it, even when faced with tempting offers.
Campbell’s Tercel is not the only high-mileage example in Nova Scotia, with fellow enthusiasts like Jim George boasting impressive figures. The camaraderie among Tercel owners extends to shared experiences and nostalgia for the enduring reliability of these vehicles. Campbell’s steadfast loyalty to his Tercel reflects a sentiment that transcends mere ownership, embodying a deep appreciation for a trusted companion on life’s journey.
