Lindsey Vonn traveled to Aspen for the holidays following another successful performance on Sunday, securing a spot on the podium for the fourth time in five World Cup races as she kicks off her Olympic season at 41 years old.
In the super-G event, Vonn claimed the third spot, with Sofia Goggia taking the victory after a disappointing downhill race the day before. Goggia expressed her emotional turmoil after her downhill performance, stating that she had cried for an hour following her eighth-place finish.
The podium was completed by Alice Robinson, who secured second place, just 0.15 seconds behind Goggia. Despite facing challenging weather conditions that led to a brief race delay, Robinson showcased her skill with an impressive run.
Vonn, hitting speeds of up to 115 kph (71 mph), finished 0.36 seconds behind Goggia but acknowledged the Italian’s exceptional performance. This marks Vonn’s 142nd podium finish in her illustrious World Cup career.
Taking a break from racing, Vonn plans to spend time in Aspen with her sister before returning to Europe for training ahead of her next race in Austria on January 10. Both Vonn and Goggia shared a moment of reflection after the race, acknowledging their strong performances.
Goggia’s win was a moment of relief for her, especially after a tense wait in the leader’s box as she watched other racers compete. The Italian’s victory marked her 27th World Cup win and eighth in super-G events.
In the overall standings, Robinson closed the gap behind Mikaela Shiffrin, who leads the race for the overall World Cup title. Shiffrin’s pursuit of a sixth overall title will continue in Austria next weekend.
The competition intensifies as the season progresses, with Vonn and Goggia showcasing their determination and skill on the slopes. Fans can expect more thrilling races as the athletes gear up for the upcoming challenges in the World Cup circuit.
