WestJet is allowing passengers with flights booked between July 30 and August 4 to modify or cancel their reservations without incurring any fees. The Calgary-based airline introduced this measure to offer travelers more flexibility and assurance amid an ongoing labor dispute with flight attendants, who recently voted overwhelmingly in favor of a strike. Approximately 4,400 union members represented by CUPE Local 8125 could potentially go on strike starting August 2.

The airline expressed optimism in reaching an agreement without disrupting guests but acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding travel plans. WestJet Rewards members received an email stating, “We believe that an agreement can be reached while avoiding guest disruption. However, we understand that uncertainty around travel plans can be concerning.”

CUPE 8125 president Alia Hussain commended WestJet’s initiative, recognizing the stress the labor dispute may have caused passengers. She emphasized the importance of providing flexibility to customers during this period of uncertainty.

While WestJet’s decision does not confirm an imminent strike, Hussain praised it as a responsible move that aligns with both parties’ commitment to reaching a resolution. The airline faced a significant labor dispute in the summer of 2024 when unionized airline mechanics staged a strike over the Canada Day long weekend, impacting tens of thousands of travelers.

WestJet assured that negotiations are ongoing, emphasizing their readiness to implement beneficial changes for cabin crew members while ensuring the airline’s long-term sustainability.
