“Wet Leg’s “Moisturizer” Album Cover Nominated for Grammy”

Wet Leg, a British indie rock band, embarked on a creative journey to select the cover image for their second album. Lead singer Rhian Teasdale, along with Iris Luz and Lava La Rue, directed the cover for “Moisturizer” aiming for a blend of femininity and repulsiveness. This unique approach landed them a Grammy nomination for the Best Album Cover, a category revived after more than 50 years.

Competing alongside Wet Leg are other notable nominees such as Bad Bunny’s “Debi Tirar Mas Fotos,” Tyler, the Creator’s “Chromakopia,” Perfume Genius’s “Glory,” and Djo’s “The Crux.” Recognizing the significance of cover art in the digital era, the Recording Academy has included recording artists as nominees this year, except for “Glory.”

The art of album covers was previously evaluated under the Best Recording Package category, encompassing all physical materials and visuals. Last year, Charli XCX, Brent David Freaney, and Imogene Strauss clinched a Grammy with the pop-culture-infused cover of “Brat.”

According to Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr., the split in categories aims to acknowledge the impact of cover art in today’s digital landscape and to honor the artists shaping the music industry. This shift offers a platform for creative teams to showcase the intricate visual worlds they craft for music projects.

Each album cover tells a unique story, capturing the essence of the music it represents. From the surrealism of “Chromakopia” to the introspective imagery of “Glory” and the enigmatic allure of “Moisturizer,” the covers reflect the diverse themes explored by the artists.

The cover of “The Crux” by Djo, conceptualized as a fictional hotel setting at Paramount Studios, stands out for its meticulous design and attention to detail. The team behind the artwork meticulously curated every element to convey a specific narrative, emphasizing the collaborative effort that goes into creating such visual masterpieces.

Artists like Bad Bunny, Tyler, the Creator, and Perfume Genius have artfully crafted covers that not only complement their music but also serve as standalone works of art. The nomination of these albums for the prestigious Grammy Awards underscores the importance of visual storytelling in the music industry and celebrates the talent behind these captivating designs.
