Farmers in Nova Scotia are optimistic that the winter snowfall will aid in recovering from the severe drought experienced last year. Most parts of the province have received an average to slightly above-average amount of snow this winter, with snow cover persisting since mid- to late January. Alicia King, president of the Nova Scotia Federation of Agriculture and a local farmer, expressed relief at the snow coverage, emphasizing its insulating benefits for soil and crops. The snow’s gradual melt is expected to replenish much-needed moisture to the ground, fostering hopes for a more promising agricultural year in 2026 following the 2025 drought.

Last year’s drought had a significant impact on fruit-producing trees, especially apple trees, as noted by Emily Lutz, executive director of the Nova Scotia Fruit Growers’ Association. Many trees lost their leaves and bore tiny, shriveled fruit due to the dry conditions. The current winter’s stable temperatures and consistent snow cover are seen as beneficial for the trees’ survival and recovery. Meteorologist Ian Hubbard reported that various regions in Nova Scotia have received average to above-average snowfall this season, with comparisons to historical averages.

Barret Kurylyk, an expert in hydrogeology at Dalhousie University, highlighted the importance of the snowmelt process in recharging groundwater. Slow, gradual melts are preferred, as they allow water to seep into the soil and replenish aquifers efficiently. While Agriculture Canada still indicates moderate to severe drought conditions in Nova Scotia as of January 31, the snowmelt process plays a critical role in groundwater replenishment. Looking ahead, a warmer-than-normal March is forecasted by Hubbard, setting the stage for the transition into spring.

Overall, the snowfall this winter brings hope for improved agricultural conditions and groundwater replenishment in Nova Scotia compared to the challenges faced in the previous year’s drought.
