Tensions are escalating in the ongoing labor dispute between the WNBA and the players’ union as the current collective bargaining agreement is set to expire next week without a new deal in place.

The dispute intensified rapidly on Tuesday and Wednesday with both sides exchanging remarks. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, who partially owns the women’s league, expressed confidence in reaching a new agreement, emphasizing significant salary increases for WNBA players. However, his comment about the players’ share of league revenues sparked criticism from the union.

In response, the Women’s National Basketball Players Association (WNBPA) accused the league and teams of attempting to constrain labor costs through an artificial salary system that does not reflect the players’ contributions adequately. The union’s executive director, Terri Carmichael Jackson, voiced dissatisfaction with the proposed fixed salary system and limited revenue sharing plan.

The WNBA countered by stating that they had proposed an uncapped revenue-sharing model directly linked to the league’s performance, offering opportunities for players to benefit from increased league revenue without any ceiling on potential earnings.

Negotiations are ongoing, with meetings held in New York recently, aiming to secure a deal before the impending October 31 deadline. The players opted out of the current agreement last year seeking improved revenue sharing, higher salaries, enhanced benefits, and a more flexible salary cap. WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert emphasized the league’s commitment to achieving a transformative deal with substantial salary and benefit enhancements.

Tensions were further fueled by union vice president Napheesa Collier’s critical remarks about the commissioner during her exit interview following her team’s playoff elimination. The Toronto Tempo are poised to join the league in the upcoming 2026 season.
