The WNBA finals are set to kick off on Friday, but the buzz among basketball enthusiasts isn’t centered on the Las Vegas Aces and Phoenix Mercury showdown. Instead, it’s the controversy sparked by Minnesota Lynx’s Napheesa Collier, a five-time All-Star, who criticized WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert during a post-season media briefing on Tuesday.

Collier, also a vice president at the WNBA players’ union and co-founder of the off-season 3×3 basketball league Unrivaled, accused the league of neglecting players with a “tone-deaf, dismissive” attitude. In a passionate four-minute speech, Collier slammed Engelbert for what she deemed as negligence in her leadership.

“We boast the finest players and fans globally, but currently, we are burdened with the weakest leadership,” Collier remarked on Tuesday. She further criticized the officiating standards in the league, labeling them as inconsistent and detrimental to the integrity of the sport.

Engelbert responded to Collier’s remarks, expressing disappointment over the characterization but emphasizing her respect for Collier and all WNBA players. Despite Engelbert’s response, calls for her dismissal have surged on social media platforms.

Support for Collier’s stance has been evident among players, with Aces star and MVP A’ja Wilson affirming her alliance with Collier. Seattle Storm forward and WNBPA president Nneka Ogwumike echoed similar sentiments on social media.

Collier’s critique stemmed from an incident during the Lynx’s Game 3 semi-final against the Mercury, where she sustained an ankle injury without a foul being called. Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve also lashed out at game officials, resulting in a one-game suspension and a record fine.

The controversy comes amid tense collective bargaining agreement negotiations between players and the league, with disputes over player compensation and league priorities. The current agreement is set to expire soon, adding fuel to the ongoing rift between players and league management.

The WNBA’s visibility and popularity have surged in recent years, yet disparities in player salaries remain a contentious issue. The league has been urged to address these disparities, with players advocating for fair compensation and recognition of their worth.

The uproar surrounding Collier’s remarks underscores the challenges facing the WNBA as it navigates issues of leadership, player welfare, and financial equity within the league.
