YouTube TV subscribers are no longer able to access Disney channels such as ABC and ESPN due to a breakdown in negotiations over a new content distribution deal. Other channels that are no longer available on Google’s pay TV platform include the Disney Channel, FX, and Nat Geo.
The dispute has the potential to impact coverage of various sports events, including college football games on Saturdays, as well as NBA, NFL, and NHL games. YouTube TV, the leading internet TV provider in the U.S. with over nine million subscribers, stated that Disney had opted to suspend its content amidst the ongoing negotiations, leading to the channels being removed.
Subscribers have been alerted to the situation through on-screen notifications in recent weeks. YouTube accused Disney of using the threat of a blackout as a bargaining tactic to secure higher fees for its content. The removal of Disney channels also benefits Disney’s own streaming services, Hulu + Live TV and Fubo.
In response to the situation, YouTube TV expressed disappointment for its subscribers and urged Disney to engage in constructive discussions to restore the networks to the platform. As a gesture of goodwill, YouTube TV announced it would provide a $20 credit to subscribers if Disney channels remain unavailable for an extended period. The base subscription plan for YouTube TV is priced at $82.99 per month.
Disney countered by stating that YouTube TV is not willing to pay fair rates for its channels and is preventing subscribers from accessing valued content. Disney highlighted the number of top sports teams playing over the weekend and accused Google of using its market dominance to stifle competition and negotiate unfavorable terms. Disney emphasized its commitment to resolving the situation promptly.
