Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Prime Minister Mark Carney held talks in Halifax before Zelenskyy’s upcoming meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump to address the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Carney expressed optimism for a just and lasting peace under Zelenskyy’s leadership and announced an additional $2.5 billion in economic aid for Ukraine. The aid includes loan guarantees to international banks and support for the International Monetary Fund.

Zelenskyy’s visit to Canada followed a phone call with Carney, where they discussed diplomatic efforts to end the conflict. Zelenskyy plans to present a 20-point peace plan to Trump during their meeting in Florida. The Ukrainian leader emphasized the importance of strengthening Ukraine’s defenses and negotiation effectiveness, urging action against Russian delays.

Carney praised Zelenskyy’s peace efforts and highlighted Canada’s support in pressuring Russia for negotiations. Zelenskyy and Trump will focus on security guarantees and economic agreements during their talks, with territorial issues also on the agenda, including discussions on the Donbas region. Zelenskyy aims for a comprehensive agreement, acknowledging challenges in reaching consensus on territorial matters.

Both sides are optimistic about ongoing dialogue, with the Kremlin confirming continued engagement with U.S. representatives following recent meetings in Florida. The focus remains on advancing negotiations and resolving key issues to achieve a sustainable peace agreement.
