Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has criticized Europe’s handling of the Greenland conflict with the U.S., urging the continent to display more bravery and labeling it as a collection of small and medium powers. Speaking passionately at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Zelenskyy expressed disappointment in Europe’s reluctance to take a leading role in defending global freedom, especially in light of shifting American priorities. He specifically called on Europe to seize Russian tankers transporting oil that supports the war against Ukraine, emphasizing the contrast with the U.S.’ recent seizure of oil-carrying ships from Venezuela.
As Zelenskyy wrapped up his speech, reports emerged that France’s navy, with assistance from the United Kingdom, intercepted an oil tanker named Grinch in the Mediterranean Sea. The vessel, suspected of operating under a false flag, was escorted by the French navy for further inspection. Praising this action on social media, Zelenskyy described it as the decisive action needed.
In a brief Q&A session following his speech, Zelenskyy announced upcoming trilateral meetings involving Ukraine, Russia, and the U.S. in Abu Dhabi. He emphasized the necessity for Russian readiness to compromise, stressing that all parties must be prepared for concessions. Zelenskyy also highlighted his productive discussions with President Trump on peace negotiations and air defense supplies.
During his time in Davos, Trump commended the positive discussions with Zelenskyy and reiterated the imperative to end the war in Ukraine. U.S. envoys, including Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, flew to Moscow for talks with Russian President Putin, lasting over three hours. Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov underscored Russia’s interest in a diplomatic resolution but maintained the continuation of military operations until a territorial agreement is reached.
Amidst ongoing Russian attacks, Ukraine faces an energy crisis, with power outages and heating issues plaguing multiple regions. Zelenskyy condemned the intentional targeting of critical infrastructure by Russia, leading to disruptions and casualties across the country.
As the situation in Ukraine remains critical, international efforts for peace and stability persist, with key stakeholders engaging in dialogues to address the conflict’s complex dynamics.
