U.S. President Donald Trump declared on Monday that Bombardier, a company based in Montreal, would be prohibited from selling its products in the United States unless it initiates manufacturing operations within the country.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump asserted, “NO MORE SELLING BOMBARDIER IN THE UNITED STATES! Their products aren’t good enough!” He emphasized that if Bombardier desires access to the U.S. market, it must establish manufacturing facilities within the country and refrain from using America solely as a ‘piggybank.’
This statement from Trump is part of his ongoing efforts to push both foreign and domestic companies to increase their manufacturing activities within the U.S., amidst escalating trade tensions between Washington and Ottawa.
Quebec Premier Christine Fréchette responded to Trump’s remarks, stating that Bombardier is a source of pride for Quebec, playing a crucial role in the province’s economy and aerospace industry. She highlighted the thousands of Quebec workers behind the company who showcase the region’s expertise globally.
Although Bombardier already has a manufacturing presence in the U.S. and complies with trade agreements such as the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA), Trump’s stance challenges the company’s operations. Bombardier emphasized its existing investments in the U.S., stressing the creation of numerous American jobs through its aircraft production.
Despite Trump’s threats, industry experts remain skeptical about the feasibility of halting Bombardier jet sales. The aerospace sector, including Bombardier, has maintained resilience amidst tariff disputes, with significant contributions to the U.S. economy through exports and job creation.
