A wildlife researcher’s study on forest regrowth post-wildfires in Newfoundland has been repeatedly disrupted by curious animals, including lynx, moose, bears, and more. Lucas Brehaut, a Canadian Forest Service scientist, faced challenges as various creatures interacted with his research equipment, damaging some and even taking away sensors.
Brehaut’s investigation focuses on how Atlantic Canada’s forests recover after wildfires, a topic gaining importance due to the rising occurrence of forest fires in the region. His team had to maneuver 19 open-top chambers through rugged terrain to monitor seedlings’ growth under different temperature conditions, simulating warming effects on the environment. Despite obstacles like harsh weather and difficult treks, Brehaut encountered unexpected disruptions caused by wildlife.
Numerous animals, from caribou to wolves, were caught on camera inspecting the experiment sites set up by Brehaut. Some animals, like moose and rabbits, not only grazed inside the mini greenhouses but also occasionally breached the structures without causing damage. Despite facing setbacks and equipment losses, Brehaut remains understanding, acknowledging that animals are simply exploring their habitat.
Kaitlyn Gaynor, a University of British Columbia professor, explains that animals’ curiosity towards unfamiliar objects is natural behavior, driven by potential food sources or perceived threats. She highlights bears’ inquisitiveness towards new objects, driven by their omnivorous nature and scent attraction. Gaynor suggests minimizing human scent and camouflaging equipment to reduce animals’ interference with research work.
Animal interference in research is a global issue, as Gaynor’s experiences in Mozambique illustrate. Baboons and hyenas frequently interact with research equipment, but elephants pose the greatest challenge due to their destructive nature and intelligence. Gaynor emphasizes that animals, rather than technical malfunctions or theft, are the primary cause of equipment damage during field research.
Despite facing disruptions from wildlife, including the occasional impact from human activities like snowmobiles, Brehaut maintains a positive outlook, recognizing the importance of coexisting with nature during scientific endeavors.
