Residents living near Lake Erie are well-acquainted with the risks associated with blue-green algae blooms. These hazardous blooms can cause skin irritation, respiratory issues, and eye irritation upon contact. However, researchers are now investigating a new potential risk – airborne algae particles that can be inhaled.

Led by Professor David Kennedy from the University of Toledo, the Great Lakes Center for Freshwater and Human Health is conducting a comprehensive study on the health impacts of airborne algae toxins. The study, known as the Great Lakes Aerosol Monitoring Research Study (GLAMR), aims to understand how these toxins affect individuals’ health over time.

The study involves participants from both the U.S. and Canada who live, work, or engage in recreational activities in the western basin of Lake Erie. Researchers are collecting samples and tracking individuals to assess their responses to the toxins. Kennedy emphasizes the importance of identifying individuals who may be more susceptible to these toxins for public health reasons.

Participants are providing various samples for analysis, including blood, urine, breath, and nasal cavity swabs. The study is also exploring the potential long-term effects of inhaling algae toxins, as well as how these toxins can travel through the air and impact coastal communities.

Experts like Gregory Dick from the University of Michigan highlight the risks associated with inhaling algae toxins, indicating that respiratory symptoms similar to asthma can occur, especially during peak bloom seasons. Although long-term data on airborne algae exposure is limited, it is known that inhaling toxins can pose greater risks than ingesting them.

The ongoing research aims to provide communities with valuable insights into the potential hazards of airborne algae and suggests precautions individuals can take to protect their health. Ault hopes the study will lead to better awareness of when air quality may be compromised, urging individuals to take necessary measures to safeguard their well-being during times of elevated risk.
