In Regina parks this month, coyotes have been making appearances, not just at the movie theatre. Scott Paton, who frequents Les Sherman Park with his dogs, encountered a curious coyote in mid-August, coming within about 10 feet. The animal, while not displaying aggression, seemed interested, possibly in search of food. Paton continued his walk, cautioning fellow park-goers. Reports from residents in the Cathedral neighborhood indicate sightings of a coyote in Les Sherman Park and Kiwanis Waterfall Park, with numerous posts on Facebook detailing encounters of the animal approaching and even following people and their pets.
Coun. David Froh also had a close interaction with a coyote during a morning run at Les Sherman Park. Expressing concern, Froh emphasized the importance of addressing persistent wildlife sightings to ensure public safety. The City of Regina disclosed that two coyotes had been reported in the area and is collaborating with provincial conservation officers to safely remove and relocate the animals. This process involves tranquilizing the coyote without the use of firearms, ensuring the safety of both the community and the animal.
Froh acknowledged the public’s worry over coyote sightings but reminded residents that such encounters are not uncommon in Regina’s natural environment. He stressed the significance of prioritizing the safety of pets and wildlife. While the movie “Coyote vs. Acme” featuring Will Forte is currently showing in various Regina theatres, Froh urged residents to report sightings of real-life coyotes and other potentially hazardous wild animals to the City of Regina for appropriate action.
