In a remarkable turn of events, a Pokémon card has fetched a staggering $16.5 million US, with Whitbourne, N.L. playing a crucial role in the deal. Peter Petipas, an auctioneer at Goldin auctions and a resident of the Avalon Peninsula community, expressed his astonishment at being part of the historic sale.

Initially anticipating a record-breaking bid of $13 million, Petipas was taken aback when the final price surpassed $15 million, setting a new benchmark in collectibles history. The coveted Pikachu Illustrator card, featuring the beloved mouse-like character, was previously owned by American social media influencer Logan Paul and was eventually sold for approximately $22 million CAD after an intense auction process.

Petipas revealed that Goldin auctions CEO Ken Goldin’s friendship with Paul played a significant role in convincing the influencer to consign the rare card. The auction not only featured the Pikachu card but also included a box of first edition base-set Pokémon cards, creating a spectacle for the attendees.

The exorbitant price tag of the Pikachu card can be attributed to its rarity, as only a few dozen were ever produced, with Paul’s card being the sole specimen highly graded by the German authentication company PSA. Despite purchasing the card for $5.275 million US in 2021, Paul was visibly thrilled and surprised by the outcome of the recent auction.

The Pokémon franchise has been a massive success over the past 30 years, grossing over $100 billion US in revenue. With substantial profits reported in 2024, Pokémon has surpassed even Disney in terms of revenue, making it one of the most lucrative media franchises globally. Petipas highlighted the enduring appeal of Pokémon, with its constant evolution through new games, merchandise, and trading cards attracting a broad fan base and ensuring continued growth.

As fans of the franchise mature and have more disposable income, they are willing to invest in nostalgic items like Pokémon cards. The enduring popularity and innovative strategies of Pokémon continue to captivate audiences, ensuring its sustained success in the market.
