Childhood vaccination rates have been declining for most vaccines in the aftermath of the pandemic, as revealed by a recent analysis of provincial data conducted by CBC News. This trend has raised concerns among public health officials regarding the heightened susceptibility to infectious diseases.

Dr. Jia Hu, the interim medical director of immunization programs at the B.C. Centre for Disease Control, highlighted that the decrease in vaccination rates can be attributed to various factors, including disruptions associated with the COVID-19 pandemic and diminishing public trust in vaccines. These factors have contributed to a higher risk of vaccine-preventable diseases, with declines ranging from five to ten percent for certain antigens, signaling a significant and worrisome trend.

A study by CBC examining data from a ten-year period between 2015 and 2024 found that childhood immunization rates were lower and experienced more significant drops in the Interior and the North regions compared to Vancouver and Victoria, where rates remained relatively stable. Notably, measles vaccination rates were particularly impacted by these trends.

The loss of Canada’s measles-free status last year following a prolonged outbreak that infected over 6,000 individuals was primarily concentrated in B.C.’s northeast region, where more than 400 people fell ill. The analysis indicated declines in measles vaccination rates among two-year-olds, seven-year-olds, and Grade 6 students in certain areas, with challenges such as rural geography and accessibility to vaccination appointments contributing to the decrease in coverage.

Experts noted that the decline in childhood immunization coverage coincided with the onset of the pandemic. Dr. Bernie Garrett, an emeritus professor at the UBC School of Nursing, suggested that the erosion of trust in government and public health institutions, coupled with anti-intellectualism and skepticism towards experts, has fueled vaccine hesitancy. A survey conducted by Leger revealed a significant increase in vaccine hesitancy among Canadians over the past five years, with safety concerns and misinformation cited as key reasons for hesitancy.

Dr. Hu expressed concerns about conflicting messages regarding vaccine efficacy, particularly referencing statements from U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. that have sown confusion among the public. The impact of such misinformation on vaccination rates remains challenging to quantify but has undoubtedly sparked questions and uncertainties among healthcare providers and patients alike.

Notably, the data from B.C. indicated a small percentage of two- and seven-year-olds whose parents refused all vaccines in 2024, with higher refusal rates in certain regions. Additionally, a significant number of two-year-olds had no recorded immunizations, attributed partly to vaccine refusal and incomplete reporting of immunization data by family doctors.

To address these challenges and rebuild trust in vaccination, Dr. Hu emphasized the importance of community engagement and the role of trusted individuals in promoting immunization. Building relationships with local communities and leveraging trusted messengers are seen as critical strategies in improving vaccination rates and combating misinformation.

Overall, the decline in childhood immunization rates underscores the urgent need for targeted efforts to address vaccine hesitancy, improve data accuracy, and enhance public trust in immunization programs.
