Brad Reese, the grandson of the creator of Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, has criticized The Hershey Co., alleging that the company has compromised the Reese’s brand by substituting cheaper ingredients in many products. Hershey has acknowledged making some changes to recipes, citing a need to adapt to evolving consumer preferences and rising cocoa prices that have prompted manufacturers to explore cost-saving measures.
In a letter addressed to Hershey’s corporate brand manager on February 14, Brad Reese raised concerns about several Reese’s items where milk chocolate was replaced with compound coatings and peanut butter was swapped with peanut creme. Expressing disappointment, Reese questioned how Hershey can maintain Reese’s reputation for trust and quality while altering the core ingredients that established the brand’s credibility.
Hershey responded by clarifying that Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups retain their original recipe, featuring milk chocolate and peanut butter crafted in-house from roasted peanuts, sugar, and salt. However, the company noted that certain Reese’s products may undergo ingredient adjustments to introduce new variations and formats that cater to consumer preferences, while ensuring the enduring appeal of the classic chocolate and peanut butter combination.
Brad Reese highlighted instances where recipes for various Reese’s products had been modified over recent years, such as the transition from milk chocolate coatings to alternatives like creme in certain bars. He also pointed out differences between Reese’s offerings in different markets, stating that European versions may vary in composition and labeling compared to U.S. counterparts.
Despite Hershey’s assurance that changes were made to enhance product innovation without compromising taste, Reese emphasized feedback from consumers who claim that Reese’s treats no longer match the quality standards of previous iterations. Citing the legacy of Milton Hershey, the company’s founder, Reese advocated for innovation that upholds product excellence and resonates with customers.
While Hershey maintains that recipe adjustments were carefully executed to preserve brand integrity, Brad Reese stressed the importance of prioritizing quality alongside innovation in product development.
