The Quebec government has suspended the legislature while the Coalition Avenir Quebec prepares to elect a new leader this weekend. Outgoing Premier François Legault’s cabinet announced that the National Assembly will reconvene with a fresh session and premier on May 5.
Former economy minister Christine Fréchette and ex-environment minister Bernard Drainville are the sole candidates vying to succeed Legault, who revealed his decision to step down in January after leading as premier since 2018. The pause in legislative activities, according to Legault’s office, aims to facilitate a smooth transition for the incoming leader.
Voting has commenced among CAQ members, with the announcement of Legault’s replacement scheduled for Sunday afternoon.
