The Toronto Tempo, the sole WNBA team in Canada, is set to tip off in May, but uncertainties loom. Negotiations for a collective bargaining agreement between the league and players have stalled, missing the initial October deadline despite an extension.

Team president Teresa Resch outlined the Tempo’s plans in a recent interview. They are seeking a permanent practice facility, community and fan input on a mascot, and are working on securing a local broadcast deal — a first in Canada’s history.

The Tempo made headlines with the appointment of general manager Monica Wright Rogers in February 2025 and head coach Sandy Brondello in November. Brondello, a championship-winning coach with the New York Liberty and Phoenix Mercury, faces the challenge of building a team from scratch, with over 30 staff members but no players as of December.

The team is scheduled to debut on May 8 against the Washington Mystics in Toronto, as announced recently. Brondello, with over 20 years of coaching experience, emphasized the importance of preparation amidst the looming possibility of a work stoppage due to the unresolved CBA negotiations.

Despite the challenges, Brondello remains optimistic, drawing on her coaching experiences to navigate the uncertainties. She aims to foster a cohesive team culture on and off the court, prioritizing player connections and authenticity.

Brondello’s focus on building a unique team culture aligns with her vision of leaving a lasting legacy for the new franchise. She recognizes the significance of Toronto’s vibrant sports culture and aims to leverage women’s basketball to empower women across the country.

As Brondello settles into her role in Toronto, she embraces the city’s diversity and warmth, drawing parallels to her native Australia. Looking ahead, she plans to explore more of Canada and immerse herself in the local culture. Brondello’s coaching philosophy centers on authenticity and resilience, offering aspiring athletes and coaches a simple yet powerful message: “Be your authentic self.”
