The latest information has been provided by the FBI and U.S. Secret Service following an incident where an armed individual breached the secure perimeter of Mar-a-Lago, President Donald Trump’s Florida resort in Palm Beach. Identified as 21-year-old Austin Tucker Martin from North Carolina, the man was fatally shot during the encounter.
According to Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw, Martin entered the property through the north gate while another vehicle was exiting. He was approached by two Secret Service agents and a Palm Beach County sheriff’s deputy. The Secret Service noted that Martin was seen entering the gate on foot as it was opening for employees to exit. Reports from Florida authorities revealed that Martin was carrying a gas can and a shotgun.
Sheriff Bradshaw mentioned that Martin was instructed to drop the items he was carrying, and when he raised the shotgun in a threatening manner, the law enforcement officers fired their weapons to eliminate the threat. It was disclosed by a Secret Service spokesperson, Anthony Guglielmi, that Martin likely acquired the shotgun while traveling south, and a box for the weapon was found in his vehicle.
As of now, investigators have not determined a motive for Martin’s actions, and efforts are underway to create a psychological profile of the individual. When asked if Martin had any prior encounters with law enforcement, Sheriff Bradshaw stated that there was no previous record.
Residents residing near Mar-a-Lago have been urged by the FBI to review their security camera footage for any potentially valuable information that could assist in the ongoing investigation.
Additional information revealed that Martin, who worked as a groundskeeper at Pine Needles Lodge & Golf Club for three years, resided with his mother in Cameron, N.C. Martin’s cousin, Braeden Fields, described him as someone who seldom discussed politics, appeared apprehensive around firearms, and came from a family supportive of Trump.
It was stated by Fields that Martin’s behavior was unexpected, as he was not known to possess any violent tendencies. Martin’s family background included a tragic incident where his sister passed away in a car accident in 2023, and he has an older brother serving in the military.
The breach at Mar-a-Lago occurred close to a previous incident where a gunman was intercepted while Trump was golfing in September 2024. This episode adds to the recent history of security issues surrounding the former president, including an earlier assassination attempt in July 2024 in Butler, Pa., where he sustained an injury to his ear. The assailant in that case, Thomas Crooks, was neutralized by the Secret Service after firing shots at a rally attendee.
