Joni Mitchell, the acclaimed singer-songwriter, is preparing to launch a new book titled “NEWS,” showcasing a collection of political paintings inspired by the constant flow of news. The book features 23 paintings, with Mitchell expressing in the book’s introduction that she transitioned from music to focus on her passion for painting.
During George Bush’s presidency and the 9/11 attack on the Twin Towers in New York, Mitchell embarked on a series of political paintings. She emphasized the importance of artists using their platform to address societal issues. Drawing parallels to historical figures like Picasso, Chaplin, and Brooks, Mitchell sees “NEWS” as her way of conveying a message visually.
Having a longstanding passion for painting, Mitchell’s artistic journey dates back to her enrollment at Calgary’s Alberta College of Art in 1963. In addition to her upcoming book, “NEWS,” Mitchell previously released an art book in 2022 called “Morning Glory on the Vine: Early Songs and Drawings,” featuring watercolor paintings, poems, and lyrics.
Scheduled for release on November 4, “NEWS” is available for pre-order on Mitchell’s website in both standard and signed editions. Several signed copies will also be auctioned off by Julien’s Publishing from October 15 to October 29, with proceeds benefiting organizations such as the ACLU and Save the Children.
In a recent social media post, Mitchell celebrated her naturalization as a U.S. citizen, marking the culmination of a 62-year journey. Born in Fort Macleod, Alta., Mitchell relocated to the U.S. in the 1960s, where her iconic songs like “Big Yellow Taxi” and “Woodstock” drew inspiration from her American experiences.
