In a whirlwind of events, the Toronto Tempo officially became a team. Following the initial announcement of the WNBA’s arrival in Toronto by CBC Sports nearly two years ago and the recent agreement on a new collective bargaining agreement, the Tempo marked significant milestones. These included signing their first player, acquiring a free agent, making a draft pick, adding a Canadian star to their roster, and revealing their debut court.

The franchise recently welcomed fans at the Coca-Cola Coliseum for the first time. The event featured the unveiling of the team’s court, introduction of their dance troupe, and a “fireside chat” with key figures such as president Teresa Resch, general manager Monica Wright Rogers, and head coach Sandy Brondello.

The Tempo’s excitement for their inaugural season was evident as they emphasized enjoying every moment. General manager Wright Rogers highlighted the enthusiasm of the players and their eagerness to be part of the team, especially after selecting UCLA’s Kiki Rice as the sixth overall pick in the recent college draft.

Despite the festive atmosphere during the event, the Tempo also acknowledged the need to focus on the future. While expansion team Portland Fire took a forward-looking approach by planning for the long term, the Tempo aimed to balance immediate impact with a strategic roster build.

Key additions like Brittney Sykes and Temi Fágnbélé, along with core player Marina Mabrey, were seen as crucial pieces in the team’s composition. The Tempo’s deliberate actions and thorough preparation during the off-season underscored their commitment to building a competitive team.

Looking ahead, the Tempo are poised to embrace a fast-paced style under coach Brondello’s leadership. With players like Nyara Sabally expected to play a pivotal role, the team is set to embody a dynamic on-court philosophy. The inclusion of Canadian player Kia Nurse further solidified the team’s connection to the local fans, evident from the enthusiastic reception she received during the event.

As the Tempo gear up for their inaugural season, the anticipation among fans and players alike sets the stage for an exciting summer ahead.
