“Russian Oil Exports Surge via Arctic Route, Outpacing Last Year”

Russia has seen a significant increase in its oil exports through the Northern Sea Route (NSR) in 2026, surpassing last year’s figures by nearly 50%. Approximately 20 million barrels have been shipped to Asia between July and mid-October, according to traders and data.

The NSR serves as a vital link connecting Russia’s western ports to Asian markets through the challenging Arctic waters. Despite being considered a more hazardous and costly route, it gained attractiveness this year due to disruptions in other key routes like the Suez Canal, the Strait of Hormuz, and the Black Sea area.

Rising geopolitical tensions, including conflicts with Iran and Ukraine, have led to record-high tanker freight rates. This situation, alongside inflation concerns, has made U.S. crude oil less accessible to Asian refiners, prompting them to explore alternative sources from the Middle East and Latin America.

Although the NSR imposes high tariffs and requires icebreaker assistance, it has become a more cost-effective option compared to the traditional Red Sea route to Asia. For Russia, which oversees the NSR, this route offers a secure alternative to European waters, where oil tankers have faced detainment this year.

Traders’ estimates suggest that the volume of Russian oil transported via the Arctic route is expected to increase by an additional five to ten million barrels by the end of the navigation season. Gazprom Neft, a significant Russian oil company, plans to boost its NSR shipments by around 35% this year compared to 2025, as announced by CEO Alexander Dyukov.

In addition to oil, Russia also supplies substantial amounts of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Asia through the NSR, with expectations of increased LNG shipments this year following the commencement of Arctic LNG deliveries. President Vladimir Putin anticipates that cargo turnover via the NSR will double to 70 million tonnes annually by the end of the decade, as highlighted during an economic forum in Vladivostok in September.

The Vostok Oil project by Rosneft, a major new oil endeavor in northern Russia, has commenced operations and is already contributing to the escalating volumes transported via the NSR.
