A guest with Tourette syndrome caused controversy at the prestigious British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA) by shouting a racial slur, sparking discussions about coprolalia, a common symptom of the condition. The incident occurred during the presentation by two Black actors at the 79th BAFTA event.

Following the outburst, both BAFTA and the BBC issued apologies for the incident involving John Davidson, who served as an inspiration for the nominated film “I Swear.” Host Alan Cumming also expressed regret to the audience for the “strong and offensive language.”

In a statement, Davidson, a Scottish advocate for individuals with Tourette syndrome, expressed deep remorse if his involuntary tics were misconstrued as intentional or having any underlying meaning. He emphasized that his outburst did not reflect his personal beliefs.

Tourettes Action, a UK-based charity focusing on supporting and researching the condition, aims to combat stigma and enhance understanding of Tourette syndrome. Following the BAFTAs, Tourettes Action CEO Emma McNally highlighted the involuntary nature of tics, emphasizing that they do not reflect a person’s beliefs or intentions.

Understanding Tourette Syndrome

Tourette syndrome, a neurodevelopmental disorder with a genetic basis, is characterized by sudden, uncontrollable movements or sounds known as tics. These tics can vary in intensity, often exacerbated by excitement or anxiety, according to the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH).
