Amid frigid temperatures in Saskatoon, University of Saskatchewan Huskie athletes have been gearing up for their practice sessions at the Merlis Besher Centre. The Huskie women’s basketball team is currently riding a remarkable winning streak of 44 games, spanning over a year and two seasons since their last defeat by the Calgary Dinos in November 2024.

The defending U Sports champions, boasting a flawless 14-0 record in the ongoing regular season, are set to defend their streak against the Calgary Dinos this Friday. Forward Téa DeMong expressed eagerness for the showdown, relishing the opportunity for revenge against the team that previously bested them.

With a lineup featuring five fifth-year players and three fourth-years, the Huskies benefit from seasoned leadership crucial to their success, as emphasized by head coach Lisa Thomaidis. Thomaidis, a seasoned mentor with a 27-year tenure, credited the team’s experience and resilience for their achievements.

The Huskies’ strength also lies in their coaching staff, led by Thomaidis, a prominent figure in U Sports basketball known for her coaching prowess and multiple national titles. Captain Gage Grassick praised the coaching staff for their transformative impact on players, shaping them into both exceptional individuals and athletes.

Describing the team as “gritty,” Grassick highlighted their tenacity and unity, essential qualities as they prepare for intense matchups against the Calgary Dinos. The Huskies’ relentless work ethic and team spirit have been instrumental in their success, with guard Logan Reider emphasizing the importance of consistent preparation and hard work.

As the top-ranked team in the Canada West conference, the Huskies face formidable competition, including the upcoming games against the Dinos. Thomaidis welcomed the competitive environment, believing it would elevate the team’s performance as they strive for excellence and prepare for the playoffs.

Looking ahead, Thomaidis expressed optimism about the team’s potential and the opportunity to showcase their talent further. The Huskies aim to maintain their winning momentum as they face the Dinos in back-to-back games this weekend at the Physical Activity Complex on the U of S campus. The action begins at 6 p.m. CT on Friday, followed by the men’s game, with Saturday’s games starting at 5 p.m. CT.
