A man has been found guilty by a jury for the murder of Misha Pavelick at a Miller High School graduation party held at a campground nearly 20 years ago. Pavelick, aged 19, was fatally stabbed at Kinookimaw campground near Regina Beach in 2006. The accused, who was 17 at the time of the incident, faced charges of second-degree murder in 2023.

Emotions ran high as family members reacted to the verdict in a Regina court, with gasps, tears, and hugs exchanged among them. The jury, consisting of 12 individuals, deliberated the case for three days before reaching the decision. The accused was convicted of second-degree murder, although the jury had the option to consider a lesser charge of manslaughter.

Due to being a minor at the time of the crime, the 36-year-old man’s identity is protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. He is currently in custody awaiting sentencing, scheduled for November 20. Lorne Pavelick, the father of Misha, expressed gratitude to the Crown prosecutor, jurors, RCMP, and his son’s friends who were present at the campground on the tragic night.

Describing his son as a beloved individual, Lorne Pavelick emphasized Misha’s positive qualities and the impact his loss has had on their family. Despite the trial’s conclusion, he highlighted the need for kindness and understanding towards all affected parties. The family aims to remember Misha for his vibrant personality and the love he shared with those around him.

Following the announcement of the verdict, the accused appeared visibly affected, sitting solemnly as his family and defense lawyer showed signs of distress. Justice Catherine Dawson’s dismissal of the jurors was met with tears from many, reflecting the emotional toll of the trial. The defense attorney had previously raised concerns about the case being influenced by rumors and biased testimonies.

Both the Crown and defense attorneys declined to comment to the media after the verdict. The Crown has indicated intentions to pursue an adult sentence in this case.
