Electronic Arts, a renowned video game publisher, has announced the closure of BioWare, a well-known game development studio based in Edmonton, after over thirty years of operation. The decision to shut down BioWare was confirmed following reports by Bloomberg that mentioned the layoff of 400 employees, with approximately 50 being from BioWare. This closure also signifies the cancellation of the upcoming installment of the popular Mass Effect series, which would have been the fifth game since its inception in 2007.
Established in 1995, BioWare was acquired by Electronic Arts (EA) in 2007. Trent Oster, co-founder of BioWare, expressed sadness over the studio’s closure in an interview with CBC Radio, stating, “It’s a pretty sad day. I mean, 30 plus years ago we built something I think was pretty awesome. And it’s pretty sad to see the end of the dream.”
The closure comes after Electronic Arts, headquartered in Redwood Shores, California, completed a $55 billion US business sale to Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund PIF, investment firm Silver Lake Partners, and Affinity Partners, managed by Jared Kushner, U.S. President Donald Trump’s son-in-law.
BioWare, known for its immersive role-playing games such as Baldur’s Gate, Dragon Age, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, and Mass Effect, had a rich history of creating captivating single-player narratives. However, its venture into multiplayer shooters with the release of Anthem in 2019 did not resonate with audiences as expected, failing to garner the same level of popularity as online games like Fortnite and Overwatch.
Despite the closure, the legacy of BioWare continues to be celebrated, with the studio acknowledging the impact its games had on players. The latest entries in BioWare’s flagship franchises, Mass Effect: Andromeda (2017) and Dragon Age: The Veilguard (2024), received mixed reviews and left some fans disappointed. Notably, a new Mass Effect game was in development before the studio’s shutdown was announced.
BioWare’s journey from a small team of developers to a prominent player in the gaming industry, attracting a devoted fan base, reflects the evolution of the studio over the years.
