Canadian forward Jonathan David has been awarded the title of CONCACAF men’s player of the year for the 2024-25 season. This recognition comes as a result of his exceptional performances both at the club and international levels. The 25-year-old, who plays for Juventus, is the second Canadian male player to receive this honor, following in the footsteps of two-time winner Alphonso Davies.

Having previously been named Canada Soccer player of the year in 2019 and 2024, David was also a nominee for the CONCACAF award in 2021, 2022, and 2023-24. On the women’s side, Haiti’s Melchie Dumornay, who competes for OL Lyonnes in France, clinched the CONCACAF women’s player of the year award for the second consecutive year.

The selection process for the awards, which cover the period from August 2024 to July 2025, involved a vote by players and coaches from CONCACAF member associations, as well as media and fans. David holds the record as Canada’s all-time leading scorer among male players, with 37 goals in 67 matches.

CONCACAF president Victor Montagliani, who is also a FIFA vice-president, extended his congratulations to Jonathan and Melchie for their outstanding achievements during the past season, highlighting their contributions at both the international and club levels.

In terms of club performance, David excelled by scoring seven goals in the Champions League for Lille in France, setting a record as the top-scoring CONCACAF player in a single edition of the tournament this century. He also became Lille’s highest scorer in European competitions before making a transfer to Juventus in July.

Since joining Juventus, David has faced challenges in finding the back of the net, registering one goal and one assist in 13 appearances for the prestigious Italian club. Other nominees in the men’s category included players from Mexico, the United States, and Costa Rica.

Melchie Dumornay’s victory in the women’s category makes her only the second player to win the CONCACAF award multiple times, joining American Alex Morgan. Dumornay, a 22-year-old midfielder, was recognized for her performances in the UEFA Women’s Champions League, where she was named the young player of the season for the second year in a row and made it to the competition’s Best XI.

Additionally, a free kick goal by Raul Jimenez against Canada in the CONCACAF Nations League Finals was chosen as the goal of the year by fans. Jimenez, who plays for Fulham, was instrumental in Mexico’s semifinal win over Canada and their subsequent victory in the final against Panama.

Notable mentions in the women’s category included players from Mexico, the United States, and Jamaica. The voting process involved fans selecting from a pool of 12 nominated goals, with Jimenez’s strike standing out among impressive goals scored by various players.

Overall, the 2024-25 CONCACAF player of the year awards celebrated the exceptional talents and achievements of Jonathan David and Melchie Dumornay, recognizing their contributions to the sport at a regional and international level.
