Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro has confirmed that power supply has returned to adequate levels after a weekend of monitoring and caution. During a press briefing on Monday, Hydro’s vice president of engineering and the system operator for Newfoundland and Labrador expressed gratitude for residents’ conservation efforts, which helped avert rotational power outages. Rob Collett stated that the system is now stable, with six out of seven generators at the Bay d’Espoir hydro plant back online, ensuring a sufficient power supply for the foreseeable future.

The power grid has successfully recovered from a period of uncertainty, with Hydro lifting the power watch status following the restoration of most generators at the Bay d’Espoir facility. Collett emphasized that the power system is now secure and operational. Additionally, Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro extended support to Nova Scotia by supplying 100 megawatts of power on Monday to address supply concerns in that province. The weekend also witnessed a record-breaking power transfer of 785 megawatts across the Labrador-Island Link.

Hydro expressed appreciation for the cooperation of Newfoundland customers in conserving power over the weekend, which helped prevent a potential power emergency and rotating outages. The utility initially issued a power warning on Saturday, urging customers to reduce their power consumption. Collett thanked the community for their efforts in supporting the grid during the challenging period.

Residents of St. John’s shared their contributions to power conservation, with individuals like Abe Derradji-Aouat and Jamal Joseph making conscious efforts to reduce energy usage in their households. With the lifting of all alerts, Hydro is now focused on resuming normal operations while maintaining vigilance over the power system. Collett assured that they are prepared to handle any future challenges and ensure the reliability of the system.

In conclusion, Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro commended the collaborative efforts of residents that contributed to stabilizing the power supply and avoiding potential outages. The successful restoration of power operations reflects the community’s commitment to energy conservation and support for the overall system resilience.
