The United States has faced strong criticism from the European Union, France, and Germany for imposing visa bans on European citizens involved in combatting online hate and disinformation. The move, which includes targeting individuals like French former EU commissioner Thierry Breton, has sparked backlash from Brussels, with threats of potential retaliatory action against what they deem as unjustified measures.

The European Commission swiftly condemned the U.S. decision, emphasizing the importance of freedom of expression as a fundamental right shared between Europe and the United States. The visa bans are expected to further strain relations between Washington and certain European capitals on various issues, ranging from free speech and defense to trade and the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

One of the focal points of contention is the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), spearheaded by Breton, aimed at enhancing online safety but drawing ire from U.S. officials. Recent clashes over EU tech regulations, including the hefty fine imposed on Elon Musk’s X platform, have intensified the transatlantic dispute. The banned individuals, which also include figures from the UK and Germany, have been accused by U.S. authorities of coercing American platforms to censor viewpoints they oppose.

In response, the EU reiterated its right to regulate economic activities and sought clarification from the U.S. regarding the visa bans. Secretary of State Marco Rubio defended the measures, alleging that the targeted individuals have promoted censorship of American speech. French President Emmanuel Macron condemned the actions as attempts to undermine European digital sovereignty, asserting that the DSA aims to ensure fair competition without singling out any specific country.

Germany’s Justice Ministry expressed solidarity with the German activists affected by the bans, labeling the restrictions as unacceptable and rejecting claims of censorship. Meanwhile, the Global Disinformation Index denounced the visa bans as authoritarian and an affront to free speech, criticizing the Trump administration for stifling dissenting voices.

This latest diplomatic standoff follows previous U.S. sanctions on French officials, indicating ongoing tensions between the two allies on issues of international significance.
