China’s military has deployed air, navy, and rocket forces to conduct joint military exercises around Taiwan, in a move described by Beijing as a “stern warning” against separatist and external interference activities. Taiwan has responded by placing its forces on alert and criticizing the Chinese government as the “biggest disruptor of peace.” The aviation authority in Taiwan has reported that over 100,000 international air travelers will be impacted by flight cancellations or diversions.

These drills follow Beijing’s expressed displeasure over a potential significant U.S. arms sale to Taiwan and comments from Japan’s prime minister indicating a potential military involvement in case of Chinese actions against Taiwan. China insists on Taiwan’s eventual reunification under its rule.

U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed confidence in the situation surrounding Taiwan, highlighting his relationship with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, who has stated the inevitability of Taiwan rejoining China. Trump emphasized that naval exercises have been ongoing in the region for two decades.

Taiwan’s Defense Ministry confirmed rapid response exercises are ongoing with heightened alert levels to safeguard the island. The ministry criticized China’s military exercises as aggressive acts against peace. Chinese military spokesperson Senior Col. Shi Yi outlined the areas of focus for the drills, emphasizing deterrence against separatist forces and external interference.

Live firing exercises have been carried out by the Chinese military in the vicinity of the Taiwan Strait, involving a range of naval and aerial assets. Taiwan’s defense officials reported the presence of numerous Chinese aircraft and vessels around the strait, urging caution over the complex repercussions of the military exercises.

Further military drills are scheduled to continue, with Taiwan’s Civil Aviation Administration warning of temporary danger zones for rocket-firing exercises. The aviation authority noted the significant impact on both international and domestic flights due to the drills.

The Chinese military has released themed posters online, signaling the purpose of the exercises as defending sovereignty. Meanwhile, tensions remain high as Taiwan condemns China’s actions as destabilizing the region and challenging international norms.

Beijing has been increasing military activities near Taiwan, prompting Taiwan to accelerate the development of an air defense system. The recent military tensions coincide with efforts to promote peace by officials from both sides.
