Zach Sutton makes heads turn when he cruises in his unique Chrysler minivan creation, named Bak2Bak. This one-of-a-kind vehicle is a fusion of a 1993 Dodge Caravan and a 1991 Plymouth Voyager, combining to form a dual-ended automobile that appears capable of moving in either direction. Notably, the front half originates from Canada, while the rear is from the U.S.
Sutton, hailing from Detroit and working in the local auto industry alongside Windsor residents, views his creation as a symbol of cross-border harmony. He describes it as a representation of the harmonious relationship between the two neighboring countries.
The 29-year-old mechanical engineer, known for his involvement in the Detroit Freakbike Experience, a group dedicated to crafting unconventional bicycles, ventured across the border for the first time with his innovative vehicle. In addition to his passion for tinkering with vehicles, Sutton engages in various hands-on activities like sewing, woodworking, and metalworking.
The idea to merge two front ends into a single vehicle stemmed from Sutton’s desire to create a project that transcends the ordinary car modifications. His aim was to craft something that would resonate with a broad audience, emphasizing the universal appeal of whimsical and playful creations.
Sutton spent three days fabricating the vehicle at the i3detroit community workshop in Ferndale, utilizing a laser to split the vehicles and seamlessly melding the front segments together. With the assistance of fellow builder Bob Katovich, who is also part of the Detroit Freakbike Experience, Sutton successfully executed the intricate division process.
The final product boasts vanity plates and a functional design, with the rear vehicle’s trunk hollowed out to store tools. Despite its unconventional appearance, the vehicle operates like a standard car, with modified features such as rear headlights serving as taillights and a relocated fuel tank in the engine bay.
Sutton’s innovative creation has garnered attention and sparked curiosity among onlookers, with reactions ranging from confusion to amusement. While the vehicle has gained widespread online visibility, Sutton emphasizes that his primary motivation was to enjoy driving a unique vehicle that brings him personal joy.
