Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has decided not to pursue a third term, withdrawing from the reelection race less than four months after launching his campaign. Walz, who was previously on the Democratic U.S. presidential ticket alongside Kamala Harris, stated on Monday that he lacked the required energy to secure another term, although he remained confident in his ability to win. He pointed to ongoing fraud investigations and described the past year as exceptionally challenging for the state, while also highlighting his achievements during his seven-year tenure.

The focus on fraud cases, particularly regarding child-care programs in Minnesota, has been relentless from U.S. President Donald Trump and other Republicans through social media and right-wing news outlets. Last week, the Trump administration announced a freeze on child-care funds to Minnesota, demanding an audit of daycare centers following fraud incidents involving state government programs. Walz criticized Trump for withholding funds, accusing him and his allies of attempting to sow division and diminish the state’s quality of life.

The strained relationship between Trump and Walz persisted beyond the 2024 campaign. After a tragic incident where former Democratic state House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband were killed, with another Democratic State Senator, John Hoffman, being shot, Trump refused to offer condolences to Walz, dismissing it as a pointless gesture. Furthermore, Trump shared a social media post alleging a baseless conspiracy implicating Walz in Hortman’s death, drawing condemnation from Walz and Hortman’s children.

Walz’s background spans from being a social studies teacher and high school football coach in a small Nebraska town to serving in the U.S. National Guard for 24 years. His decision to forgo reelection received support from Harris, who commended his dedication to serving the people of Minnesota. Walz successfully flipped a Republican seat to represent Minnesota in Congress before becoming governor in 2018.

Throughout his tenure, Walz faced challenges in a politically divided legislature but managed to navigate compromises on key issues. His administration prioritized progressive policies, including significant budget allocations towards education, healthcare, and infrastructure. Notable accomplishments under his leadership include the elimination of state abortion restrictions, protection of transgender youth rights, legalization of recreational marijuana, implementation of free school meals, and a paid family and medical leave program.

Despite these achievements, Walz faced criticism over a significant fraud scheme related to pandemic food programs, primarily impacting the Somali American community in Minnesota. Trump and his allies were accused of making disparaging remarks that unfairly targeted the entire community for the actions of a few individuals.

As the gubernatorial race unfolds, the Republican Governors Association criticized Walz’s leadership, emphasizing the need for a nominee who can address perceived mismanagement and misplaced priorities. With multiple Republicans vying for the gubernatorial candidacy, including notable figures like MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell, the upcoming election year is poised to be competitive, with 36 states holding gubernatorial elections in 2026.
