Dozens of individuals gathered on Monday at Woodland Cemetery to lay to rest Sebastian Halmagean, a Hamilton soldier who passed away in Latvia the previous month. Halmagean, aged 24, lost his life near Riga on Jan. 29, as confirmed by Canada’s Department of National Defence (DND). The details surrounding his demise are currently under investigation.

The burial ceremony at Woodland Cemetery, situated at the border of Hamilton and Burlington, Ontario, was heavily guarded by police officers due to full parking. Just before noon, Halmagean’s casket, draped in a flag, was brought into the cemetery via an army vehicle, accompanied by numerous soldiers in uniform.

A group of soldiers, acting as pallbearers, carefully lifted the casket off the vehicle, hoisted it onto their shoulders, and proceeded to carry it across a snowy field to the burial site. The tribute to Halmagean included a 21-gun salute, followed by a bagpiper performing “Amazing Grace.”

Towards the end of the brief ceremony, the flag that covered Halmagean’s casket was ceremonially folded and presented to his immediate family members seated nearby.

Halmagean’s family welcomed friends at Dodsworth & Brown Funeral Home Ancaster Chapel on Sunday, according to an obituary available online. The family expressed deep gratitude for the support and presence of friends during this challenging period.

The casket, draped in a flag, carrying Halmagean, arrived at Canadian Forces Base Trenton in Ontario on Feb. 3. Halmagean was on his inaugural deployment when he tragically passed away, as shared by his father, Alin Halmagean, in an interview with CBC Hamilton. Alin mentioned that his son enjoyed his role as a gunner stationed at the 5th Canadian Division Support Base Gagetown in Oromocto, N.B.

In the previous year, Halmagean had assisted in extinguishing fires in Newfoundland and Labrador and took pride in aiding fellow Canadians in times of need. Hamilton East-Stoney Creek MP Ned Kuruc described Halmagean’s passing as a “terrible” tragedy for the Stoney Creek community, expressing personal acquaintance with the family and knowing Sebastian since childhood.

Kuruc reminisced about Halmagean’s vibrant personality, intelligence, and positive demeanor, reflecting on him as a bright individual full of life.
