In a recent development, it has been revealed that a U.S. military aircraft disguised as a civilian plane was used in an operation targeting a drug-smuggling boat off the coast of Venezuela. The aircraft, which belonged to a covert U.S. fleet conducting surveillance missions, was equipped with munitions inside the fuselage, deviating from standard military protocol.

This information, initially disclosed by the New York Times and verified by anonymous sources familiar with the matter, raises concerns regarding the camouflage tactics employed during the operation. Pentagon press secretary Kingsley Wilson emphasized that the U.S. military employs a variety of conventional and unconventional aircraft based on mission requirements.

The revelation comes amid heightened tensions between the U.S. and Venezuela, marked by a series of military actions targeting alleged drug-smuggling activities in the region. Notably, a recent operation resulted in the capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro, who now faces drug trafficking charges in the United States.

The U.S. Senate is poised to vote on a war powers resolution this week, aiming to restrict further military engagements in Venezuela without congressional approval. President Donald Trump has reportedly been actively lobbying Republican senators to oppose the resolution, expressing strong discontent over potential limitations on his war powers authority.

Despite the Trump administration’s justification for the boat strikes as part of an “armed conflict” with drug cartels in the area, military guidelines explicitly prohibit the impersonation of civilians in combat situations, known as “perfidy.” The Defense Department manual underscores the prohibition of feigning civilian status to launch attacks, citing the increased risks and violations of international standards.

Questions have been raised regarding the legality and ethical implications of the military strikes, particularly concerning a follow-up attack that targeted survivors from a previous strike. Calls for transparency have emerged, urging the Pentagon to release unedited footage of the operations to address concerns about potential violations of the laws of war.

Lawmakers have also been briefed on the legal rationale behind Maduro’s removal in a classified session, with diverging opinions on the legitimacy of the military intervention. While some senators advocate for transparency in the legal justification, others express skepticism about the administration’s prolonged involvement in Venezuelan affairs and the use of military force for regime change.
