In a Toronto courtroom, Frank Stronach’s lawyer, Leora Shemesh, accused one of the complainants in his sexual assault case of dishonesty, disputing her claim of not recalling certain details of the alleged assault. Shemesh asserted that the complainant’s narrative was driven by regret rather than genuine memory lapses, suggesting that the complainant intentionally withheld information. The woman refuted these claims.

During the cross-examination, Shemesh implied that the woman was aware of the events but was reluctant to acknowledge her regret. One specific point of regret mentioned was the complainant voluntarily entering the Toronto condo bedroom where the alleged assault occurred, without putting up resistance. The woman responded by expressing regret for not resisting more actively during the incident.

The complainant, now in her 60s, testified that she had worked for Stronach’s company in 1983 through a connection with her father. She detailed an uncomfortable encounter where Stronach made advances towards her after taking her out for dinner and showing her the view from his apartment.

The woman recounted feeling violated as Stronach touched her inappropriately and then proceeded to sexually assault her in the bedroom. Stronach, the 93-year-old founder of Magna International, is facing 12 charges, including sexual assault and forcible confinement. He has denied all allegations and pleaded not guilty.

Shemesh emphasized the absence of explicit consent discussions during the encounter, suggesting that the complainant may have silently agreed to the actions at the time. The Crown prosecutor, Jelena Vlacic, argued that the complainant’s distress and trauma following the incident were clear indicators of non-consent.

In a dramatic turn of events, the complainant admitted to previously lying about reading a news article regarding Stronach’s other legal troubles. The judge admonished the Crown prosecutor for not addressing the falsehood promptly, leading to a moment of reflection for the prosecution team.

The trial continues as the legal teams navigate the complexities of consent, regret, and truth in the context of the sexual assault allegations against Frank Stronach.
