The countdown to the Arctic Winter Games is nearing two months. Excitement is mounting among participants and planners. However, recent geopolitical tensions have surfaced, with U.S. President Donald Trump contemplating a potential acquisition of Greenland.

Amidst discussions of military intervention to seize Greenland, the focus remains on Whitehorse’s hosting of the 2026 Arctic Winter Games in March. This multi-sport event will unite athletes from various circumpolar regions, including Alaska and an estimated 200 representatives from Greenland.

John Rodda, President of the Arctic Winter Games International Committee, affirmed the games will proceed despite the external uncertainties. Rodda, an American with longstanding involvement in the Games, emphasized the current priority is the successful organization of the upcoming event.

The Games have encountered political implications previously, exemplified by the suspension of the Russian delegation in 2022 following the Ukraine invasion. The suspension decision was rooted in ensuring youth safety, legal adherence, and Games integrity.

Despite ongoing geopolitical discussions, preparations for the Whitehorse Games remain steadfast. Claus Nielson, President of the Sports Confederation of Greenland, underscored Greenland’s unwavering commitment to participation without any reservations.

The Arctic Winter Games are scheduled to commence on March 8, marking the fifth occasion Whitehorse has hosted this prestigious event. Notably, the 2020 edition was canceled last minute due to the global COVID-19 outbreak.
