A student from a Winnipeg high school football team, who sustained a severe neck injury in a recent game, has passed away. Stephanie Ciaralli shared the sad news on Facebook, mentioning that Darius Hartshorne, affectionately known as Dee, had peacefully taken his last breath after being surrounded by loved ones. Hartshorne, a Grade 12 player for the Sisler Spartans, was injured during a match against the Tec Voc Hornets when he was tackled while returning the opening kickoff.

The community has been deeply affected by the loss, with Matt Henderson, the superintendent of the Winnipeg School Division, expressing support for those impacted. Head coach Sean Esselmont described Hartshorne as a valued and genuine member of the team, praising his character and positive influence.

Following the injury, Hartshorne was placed in an induced coma due to complications, but unfortunately, he did not recover. The team has been honoring him by wearing his jersey number on their helmets and displaying his jersey prominently at games. Politicians, including Manitoba Progressive Conservative Leader Obby Khan and Premier Wab Kinew, have extended condolences to Hartshorne’s family and classmates, emphasizing the impact of his loss on the community.

Coun. Vivian Santos also paid tribute to Hartshorne during a city council meeting, highlighting his kindness and strength. Hartshorne, who had just turned 17 in the hospital, was remembered for his compassion and the positive influence he had on those around him.
