The UN Security Council has convened an urgent meeting to address the recent violent demonstrations in Iran, following a request from the United States. President Donald Trump’s intentions regarding potential actions against Iran remain unclear, although he mentioned that reports indicated a decrease in killings related to the protests. Trump expressed relief over news that an Iranian protester no longer faces a death sentence, stating his hope for a continuation of positive developments.

Both Iran and its Western adversaries have characterized the unrest as the most severe since the 1979 Islamic Revolution that established Iran’s Shia clerical rule. Iranian authorities have claimed that what began as legitimate economic protests escalated into violence instigated by foreign adversaries, labeling the perpetrators as terrorists.

The US Ambassador to the United Nations, Mike Waltz, affirmed American support for the Iranian people during the Security Council meeting, emphasizing President Trump’s readiness to consider all options to halt the violence. Waltz refuted Iran’s accusations of foreign interference in the protests, asserting the regime’s fear of its own populace due to its weakening grip on power.

Iran’s Deputy UN Ambassador denied seeking escalation or confrontation, accusing the US of spreading misinformation and warning of a decisive response to any aggression. Following Iran’s statement that they do not plan to execute protesters, reports emerged that a detained individual involved in the protests would not face a death sentence.

Efforts to address the root economic issues that triggered the protests were mentioned by President Masoud Pezeshkian, who also pledged to combat corruption and stabilize currency exchange rates to enhance purchasing power for the underprivileged. Meanwhile, the US imposed sanctions on Iranian officials allegedly responsible for the crackdown, targeting funds transferred by Iranian leaders globally.

Tensions escalated with Iran warning neighboring countries of potential strikes on American bases, prompting a US withdrawal of personnel from regional bases. Trump indicated a possible reduction in violence, citing information from undisclosed sources, although military action remains an option. The US Treasury Department sanctioned key Iranian figures and entities, while the Group of Seven nations expressed readiness for further measures if Iran continues its crackdown.

The death toll from the protests has been substantial, with reports confirming the deaths of numerous protesters and individuals affiliated with the government. Notably, it was revealed that a Canadian citizen was among those killed, prompting condolences from Canadian officials and condemnation of Iran’s actions by both Canada and the G7.
