Indonesian search teams successfully located debris from a missing aircraft suspected to have crashed on Sulawesi island during adverse weather conditions. The turboprop ATR 42-500 vanished from radar while en route from Yogyakarta to Makassar, with 11 individuals on board, including crew members and passengers from the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries conducting a maritime surveillance mission.

The wreckage, believed to be from the missing plane, was found in the Leang-Leang region of Maros, South Sulawesi. Initial sightings by an air force helicopter led to the discovery of what appeared to be parts of the aircraft in a forested area near Mount Bulusaraung. Subsequent ground searches revealed larger debris, including the main fuselage and tail, scattered on a steep northern slope.

Muhammad Arif Anwar, head of the Makassar Search and Rescue Office, confirmed the findings, stating that the identification of major sections of the aircraft has helped narrow down the search area, focusing efforts on locating any potential survivors. Despite challenging weather conditions and rough terrain, rescue teams persisted in their search for victims.

Images and videos released by the National Search and Rescue Agency depicted rescuers navigating through fog-covered mountainous terrain to access the wreckage site. Indonesia, with its vast archipelago, heavily relies on air and sea transportation, facing a history of transportation accidents ranging from air disasters to maritime incidents.
