French President Emmanuel Macron strongly criticized US President Donald Trump’s threat to impose hefty tariffs if Europe refuses to allow the US to acquire Greenland, stating that Europe will not succumb to intimidation. Macron emphasized that Europe will not passively accept dominance and will uphold territorial sovereignty and the rule of law. He highlighted the importance of respect over bullying and the rule of law over brutality.
Macron delivered his remarks at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, wearing aviator sunglasses due to an eye injury. Trump had previously threatened significant tariffs on French wine and champagne and breached diplomatic discretion by sharing private messages from Macron.
Macron condemned Trump’s tariff threats and emphasized the need to stand against such coercive tactics. The European Union is considering implementing tariffs on US goods worth 93 billion euros in response to Trump’s actions. Macron advocated for the EU to utilize the Anti-Coercion Instrument, also known as the “trade bazooka,” to restrict US access to public tenders and tech platforms.
The strained relationship between Trump and Europe escalated due to Trump’s efforts to claim control over Greenland and his proposal for a “Board of Peace,” which France has hesitated to join. Macron’s refusal to comply with Trump’s demands has drawn ire from the US president, leading to further tensions between the two leaders.
Despite Trump’s threats, Macron has no plans to extend his stay in Davos to meet with Trump. Macron’s presidency has been marked by fluctuating relations with Trump, with Macron’s supporters asserting that he is targeted for defending democratic values.
