Former Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chrétien has criticized Alberta’s separatist movement, stating that Premier Danielle Smith cannot consistently shift positions based on her interests. Chrétien emphasized the inconsistency in Smith’s request for federal intervention in British Columbia to aid Alberta while opposing assistance for the rest of Canada.

The discussion between Chrétien and Smith occurred following a dispute between Smith and BC Premier David Eby over Alberta’s pipeline proposal submission to the federal Major Projects Office next spring. Smith argues that Alberta must lead the proposal due to private industry hesitance caused by federal regulations like the 2019 oil tanker restrictions in BC.

Alberta has urged the federal government to repeal the tanker ban and proposed emissions cap while considering legislation to disregard international agreements signed by Canada. Eby has criticized Alberta’s proposal, labeling it as not a viable project that could jeopardize infrastructure plans with local First Nations’ support.

Chrétien dismissed Smith’s grievances about being landlocked, highlighting Alberta’s current oil production success and emphasizing the importance of unity among Canadian provinces. He referenced a forecast projecting record oilsands production this year, with a substantial increase anticipated in northern Alberta’s production.

Regarding Alberta’s potential separation from Canada, Chrétien advised separatists to adhere to the Clarity Act, which regulates the secession process for provinces or territories. He emphasized the complexity of the secession process, noting the necessity of parliamentary approval and clear majority support.

In a separate discussion, Chrétien discussed US President Donald Trump’s trade disputes with Canada and the significance of excluding Canadian water from trade agreements. Chrétien underscored the importance of negotiations in trade agreements, highlighting past challenges with NAFTA implementation.

Chrétien warned about Trump’s threat to democracy, citing the president’s disregard for the rule of law. He stressed the importance of upholding democratic values in Western society and the need for world leaders to address Trump’s behavior while adapting to global changes.
