On July 19, Justin Bieber is set to headline the inaugural FIFA World Cup halftime show alongside Madonna, Shakira, and BTS. The event will take place during the final match at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. The star-studded lineup will also feature Burna Boy, Gustavo Dudamel, and Coldplay, who will be joined by the PS22 Chorus from Staten Island, N.Y. The artists were selected by Coldplay’s Chris Martin for the 11-minute performance.
Bieber expressed his gratitude for being part of the halftime show and highlighted the impact it will have on expanding access to education for children globally. The show aims to support the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund, with a goal of raising $100 million USD for youth education and football programs worldwide.
Shakira, known for her 2010 World Cup hit “Waka Waka,” has added a new theme song, “Dai Dai,” featuring Burna Boy. The halftime show will also feature Burna Boy, who sees it as a privilege to represent Africa and a significant responsibility.
Hugh Evans, the co-founder and CEO of Global Citizen, praised the event as the largest gathering of artists for a cause since Live Aid. He anticipates it to be one of the most-watched 11-minute music performances in broadcast history.
Bieber, who set records with his Coachella performances in April, is noted for becoming the highest-paid headliner of all time and generating $200 million USD in ticket sales for a single weekend. Earlier rumors of a tour following his Coachella success were debunked by TMZ in June.
