A newly established Filipino basketball league concluded its first season in Prince George, B.C., offering a platform for diaspora players from the region to unite through sports and cultural exchange. Basketball holds a special place in Filipino culture, with individuals like Erik Dilao nurturing dreams of reaching the NBA from a young age, even playing with makeshift equipment like coconuts.
Residing in northern B.C., Dilao played a pivotal role in founding the Filipino Basketball League (FBL), where players from various areas gather weekly at Prince George’s Connaught Youth Centre. The Philippines has a significant presence in British Columbia, with over 174,000 individuals identifying as Filipino, a quarter of whom were born in the country. In Prince George specifically, nearly 1,500 residents are of Filipino descent, constituting approximately one percent of the total population.
The league attracted around 150 participants, including players, volunteers, and fans, who engaged in five hours of games every Saturday involving 10 teams. Teams were named after local communities like Quesnel and Williams Lake, as well as traditional names such as Thunderbird and the PG Hoopers. The season concluded with Team Burger emerging as the champions, sporting a uniform featuring a burger, fries, and a soft drink.
Many players in the FBL are recent arrivals to Canada, coming for work or education. The weekly games not only allowed them to pursue their passion for basketball but also provided a platform to reconnect with their cultural roots by communicating in Tagalog and enjoying enthusiastic support from the crowd. Looking ahead to 2026, the league plans to expand its inclusivity by welcoming players from diverse backgrounds and incorporating a volleyball league.
Despite the competitive spirit during games, the primary focus of the league remains on fostering a sense of community among its members in a new country, emphasizing the joy of togetherness above all else.
