Prime Minister Mark Carney’s address at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, had a significant impact in Mexico, a nation facing similar challenges as Canada regarding its relationship with the dominant U.S. neighbor. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum praised Carney’s speech as timely and relevant during a press conference, commending his insights on the evolving global order.

Carney highlighted in his speech the disappearance of the notion of a rules-based international system and emphasized the choice middle-power nations have in either competing individually for influence or collaborating to establish a new path forward.

The Canadian government, led by Carney, has been actively strengthening ties with Mexico, particularly in the context of the renegotiation of the trilateral trade agreement involving the U.S., known as the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA).

The recent visit of Governor-General Mary Simon to Mexico, following discussions with President Sheinbaum, emphasized the importance of fostering relations between the two nations. This visit builds on previous diplomatic efforts, including Carney’s trip to Mexico last September and an upcoming trade mission led by Canada-U.S. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc.

Federal Deputy Dolores Padierna Luna from the National Regeneration Movement party emphasized the necessity for Canada and Mexico to enhance their collaboration, especially as they approach negotiations to renew the trade agreement. She stressed the importance of unity in defending sovereignty, echoing Carney’s stance on the matter.

Deputy Juan Ignacio Zavala Gutiérrez, from the Citizen’s Movement party, echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the need for strategic cooperation between Canada and Mexico in dealing with larger global powers like the U.S. and China.

Ana Isabel González González, a Deputy from the Institutional Revolutionary Party, underscored the economic complementarity between Mexico and Canada, emphasizing the need for a united front to preserve the trade agreement amid uncertainties surrounding the U.S.’s commitment to the deal.

Mexican journalist Alex González Ormerod highlighted the strategic benefits of deepening the Canada-Mexico relationship, pointing out the economic synergies between the two countries. He emphasized the potential for collaboration in key sectors like canola production, showcasing the mutual benefits of a closer partnership.

The evolving dynamics in North American trade relations underscore the imperative for Canada and Mexico to fortify their ties, ensuring a resilient and mutually beneficial partnership in the face of shifting global trade dynamics.
