In a social media update, Trump revealed his decision to retract threatened tariffs on eight European countries to pursue control over Greenland, following discussions with Rutte on a prospective deal regarding Greenland and Arctic security. Nielsen acknowledged the need for enhanced security in the region and ongoing discussions with Denmark and NATO on this matter.
Regarding potential involvement in the U.S.’s missile defense system, Nielsen expressed optimism about reaching mutually beneficial agreements. Despite recent tensions, Nielsen emphasized the importance of maintaining a constructive dialogue and cooperation between Greenland and the U.S.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen underscored the significance of territorial integrity in the Arctic, stating that any political discussions, including security and economic matters, are open for negotiation except for sovereignty. Frederiksen emphasized the necessity of respectful dialogue with allies to bolster Arctic security while safeguarding territorial sovereignty.
Skepticism arose among Copenhagen residents regarding Trump’s policy reversal.
