Michael Misa, a skilled center known for his scoring abilities, concluded the previous season in the Ontario Hockey League with an impressive 134 points in 65 games. His success led to the San Jose Sharks selecting him as the No. 2 overall pick in the NHL draft held in June. Despite starting his professional career by earning a roster spot and scoring his first goal, Misa faced a setback due to an ankle injury in early November, sidelining him for a month.

Currently, Misa is striving to contribute to Canada’s quest for gold at the world junior hockey championship. He has managed only one assist in the first two games of the under-20 tournament, which included a thrilling 7-5 win against the Czech Republic and a tense 2-1 overtime victory over Latvia. The 19-year-old from Oakville, Ontario, expressed his desire to increase his production on the ice while emphasizing his gratitude for being back in good health.

Playing primarily on Canada’s top line alongside Tij Iginla and Porter Martone, Misa acknowledged the need for improvement and chemistry within the team. Despite the offensive prowess shown by Gavin McKenna, Michael Hage, and Brady Martin, the team has faced challenges generating consistent offense and maintaining possession in the opponent’s zone.

Assistant coach Gardiner MacDougall highlighted the importance of Misa gaining more experience on the ice, especially after limited game time with the Sharks’ AHL affiliate before joining the national team. Misa admitted to the need to shoot more and simplify his play to enhance the team’s offensive output.

Looking ahead, Canada aims to enhance its performance, with MacDougall emphasizing the importance of strategic plays and adapting tactics to overcome opponents. As the team gears up for the upcoming match against Denmark, Misa remains focused on contributing to the team’s success and seizing the opportunities presented on the international stage.

While MacDougall relishes his first experience coaching at the world junior championship, his infectious energy and leadership have already made a positive impact on the players. As the tournament progresses, Canada aims to build on its strengths and address areas for improvement to emerge victorious in the competition.
